CARE AND SUPPORT AFTER BABY HAS ARRIVED

Supporting you to feel calm and confident with your growing family, providing practical and emotional support and information

Are you wondering how you will manage in the early days of looking after a tiny human? What might the day look like with a baby to care for, how will you get everything done that needs to be done, how will you develop all the new skills that come with parenthood?

As a mother, I have been through the whirlwind of the early days and weeks with a newborn. With my first son, when I felt very unsure about what I was doing and what was normal with a new baby (I remember being asked by the GP if he was an easy baby and saying that I had no idea because I had nothing to compare him against!). When I had more children, much of the day felt like a juggle between meeting the needs of a newborn and the endless energy of toddlers and beyond. I felt more confident with my younger children but still had to navigate each baby with their own unique personality - different sleep habits, feeding journeys, desire to be up or down, napping on the go or at home.

I know that you want to make sure you are supported at this time, to know that someone has got your back in the early days of parenthood. As your postnatal doula, I will be there to support you and your baby in your home - ‘mothering the mother’ as well as supporting the whole family as it welcomes a new member. I can be available from as soon as baby is born, or maybe once your partner returns to work, for as long as you feel you need the support.

Do you want to be certain you will have time for a shower while someone holds your baby?

Do you want to be able to share how tricky the previous night was while enjoying a hot cup of tea and some breakfast?

Do you want someone who can recommend a local cranial osteopath or baby group without having to trawl through Google?

As your postnatal doula, I can start from as soon after baby is born as you would like, to help you recover from birth and ease into life with your new baby. Each visit will look different depending on what you and baby need on any given day, it might include:

  • Looking after baby to give you time to rest, shower, take a walk

  • Supporting with feeding baby and understanding their cues

  • Emotional support - providing reassurance and a listening ear, along with a hot cup of tea!

  • Light housework - stacking the dishwasher, some washing or ironing

  • Preparing some snacks or a family meal

  • Entertaining older children while you spend time with baby or have a sleep together

  • Teaching you simple baby massage techniques (I am a trained baby massage teacher) to help calm and connect with baby

A delight of a doula - like Mary Poppins for new mothers! There was a sense of relief when Laura would arrive with her toolkit of reassurance, experience and kindness. She offered advice without overstepping and compassion without question. If you are considering booking a postnatal doula, our family would highly recommend Laura.
